Thierry Bollin lowers his personal best in the preliminary heat of the 50 m crawl. However, 22.95 seconds is not enough to qualify for the semi-finals.
Thierry Bollin did have a smile on his face when he came in first after his preliminary heat in the 50 meter crawl. This was because the 24-year-old from Bern had completed the 50-metre crawl sprint distance in the Olympic pool in Paris in under 23 seconds for the first time. His previous best was 23.39 seconds.
However, it was clearly not enough for the backstroke specialist to make it into the top 16 who qualified for the semi-finals, meaning that he was eliminated after one event, as he had already done in the 100-metre backstroke.
