Coach Xabi Alonso's team overtook Bayern Munich as champions in Germany after eleven titles in a row and also won the cup. Xhaka and Co. suffered their only defeat of the season in the Europa League final.
Alongside the 31-year-old Swiss, his team-mates Florian Wirtz and Alejandro Grimaldo are also among the nominees. Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior (both Real Madrid) and Rodri (Manchester City) are considered favorites. Last year's winner Lionel Messi is not on the list of candidates.
The award, which is presented by the trade magazine France Football, will be held in Paris on October 28.
