Zheng is the first Chinese female Olympic singles tennis champion. Vekic secured Croatia's first medal in women's tennis with silver. Viktorija Golubic, the only Swiss player in the field in the absence of Bencic, who became a mother for the first time in April, was eliminated in the first round against Jessica Pegula.

In the men's tournament, Lorenzo Musetti took bronze in the match for third place against Félix Auger-Aliassime (6:4, 1:6, 6:3).
