The Armed Forces have fulfilled their mission to safeguard the country's existence and have achieved a great deal within a very short space of time, according to a statement published by the Defense Group on Thursday. The disaster operation lasted from June 30 to July 28. During this time, the army supported the civilian authorities in coping with the severe storm damage.

In the canton of Valais, members of the armed forces performed 2675 days of service on the ground and 11 hours in the air, in the canton of Ticino 764 days of service and 76 flying hours. In addition to this service by the militia troops, the professional organization of the Defence Group also provided considerable support to the cantons in deploying and equipping the troops, the report continued.

The work in the canton of Valais included, for example, evacuation work in Siders-Chippis, Saas-Grund, Val d'Anniviers and Goms. In eleven flight hours, the air force helped the civilian authorities in Valais to generate an overall picture of the situation, according to the press release.

In the canton of Ticino, members of the armed forces built a 61-metre-long emergency bridge to replace the destroyed Visletto Bridge to provide access to the Bavona and Lavizzara valleys. The air force also flew 76 hours and transported 695 passengers and 63.2 tons of material.

The army will remain present in the Maggia Valley until September 17, according to the statement.
