A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has shaken eastern Turkey. The quake had its epicenter in the province of Malatya, wrote Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on the X platform.

So far there have been no reports of injuries or major damage to property, said the mayor of Malatya, Sami Er, on CNN Türk. The quake was also reportedly felt in the surrounding provinces of Elazig and Diyarbakir.

The Afad civil protection agency reported that four people had been rescued unharmed from a partially damaged building in Elazig. For the time being, people were advised not to return to their homes.

Malatya was also one of the provinces severely affected by the quakes on February 6, 2023. Over 1,000 of the more than 50,000 people who died in total died in Malatya. Many people continue to live in containers in the province, where tens of thousands of buildings were also destroyed in the double quakes.
