92 votes went to Alain Berset, 78 to Indrek Saar and 70 to Didier Reynders, as the President of the Parliamentary Assembly, Theodoros Rousopoulos, announced shortly before 12.45 p.m. on Tuesday in the Council Chamber in Strasbourg. A total of 241 ballot papers had been received, 240 of which were valid. An absolute majority of 121 votes was required.

According to the agenda, the second round of voting will take place between 16:00 and 18:00. The results should be announced at around 7.00 pm. In this ballot, a simple majority is sufficient to be elected. This means that the person who receives the most votes will become the new Secretary General.

All three candidates are admitted to the second ballot. However, it cannot be ruled out that one of the candidates will withdraw before the start of the second ballot. Berset and Saar belong to the political family of the European Social Democrats, while Reynders is a Liberal politician.
