Emergency services, residents and professionals have cleared streets, houses and supermarkets of mud and debris. In many places, however, there is no sign of a return to normality any time soon in view of the enormous damage.

While the highway between Lyon and Saint-Étienne, which was interrupted due to the masses of water, is back in operation, train services between the two cities will probably not resume until Monday. In order to better compensate affected farmers in the region, the floods were classified as a natural disaster by the prefecture.

Parts of France were affected by heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday. Entire towns were completely flooded, cars were washed away and people had to be evacuated. Across the country, the emergency services were called out 2,300 times.
