From Monday, food retailers in France will have to label deceptive packaging with a notice on the shelf. This applies to products whose previous pack contents are reduced while the price remains the same or is increased.

This was announced by the Paris Ministry of the Economy. Although this practice is not prohibited, it is often criticized as it is often difficult for consumers to recognize when shopping. For a period of two months after the pack size has been changed, a notice must now be displayed on the shelf in France stating how the quantity in the pack and the price have changed. The regulation applies to food and other products, both branded products and supermarket private labels.
The regulation on labeling so-called "shrinkflation" was introduced in France during last year's high inflation, when many people complained about high food prices and felt deceived by smaller packaging.
