Trial/Court Geneva judiciary sentences Tariq Ramadan for rape
The Geneva judiciary has sentenced the Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan to three years' imprisonment for rape and sexual assault. He must serve one year in prison, as the Geneva Court of Appeal announced on Tuesday.

The Geneva judges were of the opinion that Ramadan had actually sexually assaulted a woman in a Geneva hotel room one night in October 2008. The Islamic scholar has always denied these allegations. In May 2023, the Geneva Criminal Court acquitted him of these allegations.
In its media release, the Court stated that the Criminal Court of Appeal and Revision had found that several witness statements, certificates, medical notes and expert opinions from private experts were consistent with the facts alleged by the plaintiff.
An appeal against this judgment can be lodged with the Federal Supreme Court within 30 days.
