Politics Army: Prime Minister in Bangladesh resigns

Following violent clashes during protests in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned, according to the army. An interim government will take over, explained army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman.

The autocratic head of government is said to have fled to India in a helicopter, according to a report in the daily newspaper "Prothom Alo" based on sources. Protesters had stormed her residence in Dhaka.

According to local media reports, around 300 people died in the protests, which have been ongoing since July. There was initially no new official information from the authorities.
