China's head of state and party leader Xi Jinping has reaffirmed the goal of integrating Taiwan into the People's Republic. A "reunification" is an unstoppable trend and reflects the will of the people, he said at a reception one day before the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic.

At the same time, China would "resolutely oppose separatist activities for Taiwan's independence", he announced.
China sees Taiwan as part of its territory, although the island republic has been led by an independent and democratic government for decades. The communist leadership in Beijing claims to want to bind Taiwan to the mainland peacefully, but has already threatened to invade in order to achieve this goal.
"Taiwan is China's inviolable territory," Xi said during a reception for top Communist Party cadres, military officials and foreign diplomats at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. No one can stop the wheel of history, he said.
The incumbent Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te is seen as a separatist by the People's Republic, as his Democratic Progressive Party, which has been in power since 2016, is in favor of Taiwanese independence. Tensions therefore regularly escalate in the strait between the two states (Taiwan Strait). China's People's Liberation Army demonstrates its military might on an almost daily basis.
