More than a week after the presidential election in Honduras, the candidate supported by US President Donald Trump, Nasry "Tito" Asfura, has slightly extended his narrow lead. After counting almost 99 percent of the votes, Asfura from the right-wing National Party has around 40.5 percent according to preliminary results. TV presenter Salvador Nasralla is close behind with around 39%. He is the candidate of the center-right Liberal Party.

Since the election on November 30 in the Central American country, counting has been slow. At the weekend, the publication of new data was even completely suspended. "This is fraud. The system is being manipulated," wrote Nasralla on the X platform. The left-wing governing party Libre, which finished in third place, has called for the election to be annulled. The electoral council has 30 days to announce a winner.

Trump's interference

Before the election, Trump had interfered in the election campaign in favor of Asfura. If the ex-mayor of the capital Tegucigalpa won, Honduras could count on the support of the USA; if not, Washington would not waste any money, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

He also pardoned Honduran ex-president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was serving a 45-year prison sentence in the USA for involvement in drug trafficking. Asfura and Hernández belong to the same party.

Hernández has been the subject of an arrest warrant for corruption in Honduras since 2023. The public prosecutor's office has announced that it now intends to arrest the former head of state. The international police organization Interpol has also been called in, announced Attorney General Johel Zelaya on X. Hernández is not planning to return to Honduras for the time being.
