A former federal judge will investigate the unusually high number of deaths at Zurich University Hospital's cardiac clinic. The hospital board has given Niklaus Oberholzer the mandate. The investigation is expected to take around a year.

Oberholzer worked at the Federal Supreme Court in Lausanne until 2019. He has the best qualifications to lead the work of the independent investigation commission, the University Hospital of Zurich announced on Thursday.

The aim of the investigation is to examine the unusually high number of deaths and complications in USZ cardiac surgery between 2016 and 2020. The hospital management wants to "fully clarify" these in order to regain the trust of patients and the public.
