"We have experienced the great football festival in the heart of Europe that we all wanted," explained Faeser in Berlin on Monday night. Germany had "presented itself as a good host".
"Of course, football cannot solve the problems of our time, but it has created a sense of community during these weeks that has done us good as a society," Faeser concluded. "Many images of this summer in our cities will remain unforgettable."
Thanks to the emergency services
The Minister emphasized that thanks for "this peaceful football festival" were due "above all to the tens of thousands of police officers in the federal states and the federal government, the emergency services, the many volunteers". They were "always on hand" and "quickly intervened" when necessary.
Faeser had previously described the European Championships as the "biggest operation in the history of the German Federal Police". During the tournament, which was held in ten German cities, 22,000 police officers from the Federal Police alone were deployed every day. There are currently discussions about extending the nationwide border controls in place during Euro 2024. Faeser rejected corresponding demands from the FDP.
The European Championships began on June 14 and ended on Sunday evening with the final in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. Spain defeated the English national team 2:1 in regular time. Faeser congratulated "the Spanish team warmly on their European Championship title - well deserved after a long tournament, fought for with passion and team spirit".
