Two days before the presidential election in Tunisia, hundreds of people have demonstrated against the increasingly repressive policies in the North African country. More than a thousand demonstrators gathered in the center of the capital Tunis, according to eyewitnesses. An alliance of human rights activists had called for the new protests. "The people want the fall of the regime," chanted the predominantly young demonstrators and students.

A few weeks ago, thousands of people had already protested in Tunis against the suppression of critical voices. They accused President Kais Saied of an authoritarian style of government. In addition to the incumbent Saied, only two other candidates have been approved for the election on Sunday. One of them is currently in prison.

Saied took office in 2019 and has gradually expanded his power since 2021, including through the dissolution of parliament and a controversial new constitution. Observers are increasingly doubtful that the election can be held freely and fairly.
