The area around the northern Israeli city of Safed has been attacked by around 40 rockets from Lebanon, according to the Israeli army. There was initially no information about casualties or damage.

There were also repeated air raids in numerous other Israeli towns near the de facto border with Lebanon. Hezbollah reported that it had fired rockets at locations north of the Israeli coastal city of Haifa.

The declared aim of the Israeli government is to drive the Shiite militia Hezbollah from the border so that around 60,000 evacuated Israelis can return to their homes.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said it was continuing to bomb Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, including again in the capital Beirut. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health on Tuesday evening, 55 people were killed and 156 injured in such attacks within 24 hours.
