After the killing of Hamas leader Jihia al-Sinwar, many Israelis celebrated the death of the mastermind of the massacre on October 7, 2023.

In a residential complex in the city of Ashdod, people reacted to the news of Sinwar's death by clapping and whistling; another video recording showed cheering bathers after a loudspeaker announcement on the beach.

Israel's military had killed Sinwar during an operation in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. He had been at the top of Israel's hit list since the beginning of the Gaza war. For long stretches, Sinwar is believed to have hidden in the hundreds of kilometers of tunnels under the Gaza Strip. The 61-year-old terrorist belonged to the founding generation of Hamas and is regarded as the chief planner behind the attack on Israel around a year ago, in which more than 1,200 people were killed and a further 250 deported to the Gaza Strip.

Relatives of the 101 hostages who remain in the Gaza Strip today welcomed the killing of the Hamas chief, but also called for further efforts to bring their family members home. "We have settled the score with the mass murderer Sinwar, but there will be no total victory if we do not save their lives and bring them home," the Jerusalem Post newspaper quoted a spokeswoman for the hostages' relatives as saying.
