US Vice President Kamala Harris has given a preview of how she would present herself in the election campaign against Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. She had dealt with criminals of all kinds as a prosecutor and attorney general of California, the 59-year-old said during an appearance at the Democratic campaign headquarters in Wilmington in the US state of Delaware. "Criminals who abused women, scammers who ripped off consumers and con artists who broke rules for their own gain. So listen to me when I say I know guys like Donald Trump."

Harris - born in the USA to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father - presented herself as a candidate of progress and placed her potential candidacy in the context of the US civil rights movement. Trump looks back and she looks forward, was the message. The Republican wanted to take the country "back to a time when many of our fellow Americans did not yet have full freedoms and rights". She, on the other hand, believes "in a better future that has room for all Americans".

During her appearance, Harris appeared confident of victory, but also acknowledged that the swing to her as a possible candidate for the campaign team was a change. "I know it's been a rollercoaster ride and we all have so many mixed emotions," she said, referring to US President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race for the White House. "We have so many damn good reasons to love Joe Biden, and I have full confidence that this team will be the reason we win in November." Harris emphasized that she will "do everything in her power" to reunite the Democratic Party after the grueling weeks.

Husband Doug Emhoff accompanied Harris to the appearance. Surprisingly, Biden also joined in and called to ask for Harris' support from his former campaign team. Following Biden's historic withdrawal from the campaign, Harris is currently considered the Democrats' most promising candidate for the US presidential election on November 5. However, she still has to be nominated by her party. Whether the party will accept Biden's proposal will be decided at the Democratic nominating convention from August 19 to 22 in Chicago.
