A few weeks before the US presidential election, Melania Trump has spoken out on the controversial issue of abortion. "There is no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women have from birth: individual freedom," says the wife of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in a video published on the X platform. Individual freedom is a fundamental principle for which she stands "without a doubt".

The video, which is only 28 seconds long, ends with a question: "What does 'my body, my choice' really mean?" She is referring to the English slogan "My body, my choice", which abortion advocates use as a central argument in the debate.
Topic probably also appears in memoirs
The British Guardian had previously reported on an excerpt from the as yet unpublished memoirs of the former First Lady. In it, Melania Trump describes herself as a passionate advocate of a woman's right to control her own body - including the right to an abortion. According to the Guardian, she writes in her book that it is "imperative to ensure that women can make their decision to have a child based on their own convictions and free from any interference or pressure from the government".
The dispute over abortion rights is one of the central issues in the US election campaign. The Democrats around candidate Kamala Harris repeatedly warn that women's rights in the USA are in great danger. Just over two years ago, the Supreme Court overturned the nationwide right to abortion. Former President Trump had shifted the majority on the court significantly to the right through several reappointments, making this decision possible in the first place. Now the states can decide on abortion rights - abortions are now largely banned in a number of them.
Counterweight to Donald Trump?
In the meantime, however, Trump has distanced himself somewhat from a strict anti-abortion line. He often makes ambivalent statements and repeatedly avoids taking a clear position. Polls show that most Americans support a limited right to abortion. The positioning of his wife - who almost never appears in the election campaign - could therefore also be aimed at giving him a more moderate touch in the debate.
