In Russia, the state media supervisory authority Roskomnadzor has announced a ban on the online service Discord. Access to the messaging platform is being restricted "due to the violation of the requirements of Russian legislation", it said.

This relates to the "prevention of the use of messages for terrorist and extremist purposes", Roskomnadzor explained on Tuesday.

Russia has been instructing foreign online platforms to delete content that is classified as "illegal" for several years and imposes fines if this does not happen. The US-based service Discord was fined the equivalent of around 56,500 euros for this reason in July 2023 - according to Roskomnadzor, the company ignored this.

Several services banned

According to the authority, Discord did not comply with an order from October 1, according to which almost 1,000 pieces of content were to be removed. The platform is "actively used by criminals", explained Roskomnadzor.

Since the start of its offensive in Ukraine in February 2022, the Kremlin has tightened its grip on the digital sector. Among other things, Moscow banned a number of Western websites and online services.
