The Russian war of aggression means distance learning for many children in Ukraine. The aid organization Save the Children points this out in a report ahead of the start of school after the vacations.

"After more than two years of war, there are thousands of children in Ukraine who have never set foot in a classroom," says Sonja Chusch, country director of Save the Children in Ukraine, according to a statement. According to the organization, it interviewed around 1,500 schoolchildren, caregivers and teachers in Ukraine for the report, but not in the Russian-occupied territories.
Emotionally heavy burdens for children
According to the organization, many schools remain closed due to airstrikes, shelling or a lack of shelters. Pupils are having problems with poor internet, a lack of electronic devices and a lack of electricity during distance learning.
In addition, many children lack personal contact with teachers. A large proportion do not feel safe and have lost interest in learning. Even face-to-face lessons are stressful for the children because they regularly experience air alarms and have to stay in shelters.
According to the organization, teachers stated that low pay, an increased workload and psychological stress have an impact on the quality of teaching and staff retention. Parents criticized the lack of equipment and learning materials, among other things.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for more than two and a half years.
