In Ticino, the regions of Blenio, Riviera, Bellinzona and Sotto Ceneri are affected. In the canton of Graubünden, the storms are affecting Bregaglia, Moesano and Poschiavo, as announced by the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) on Tuesday.
It is recommended to avoid the banks of rivers and lakes as well as steep slopes. Streams in the mountains should also be strictly avoided due to the possibility of debris flows, MeteoSwiss wrote.
Individual thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening could result in even higher precipitation rates in Ticino, according to the federal government. The precipitation in Ticino is expected to end during the evening.
The runoff peaks are expected on Tuesday evening and during the night into Wednesday, it added. After a relaxation phase on Wednesday, a renewed rise in runoff is forecast for Thursday. The levels of Lago di Lugano and Lago Maggiore will continue to rise due to the increased inflows.
Only last summer, storms in the Maggia Valley in Ticino caused severe damage and claimed several lives.
