The Spanish airline Iberia, the Portuguese airline TAP, the Chilean Latam, the Colombian Avianca, the Brazilian airline GOL and Caribbean from Trinidad and Tobago had suspended their flights on Saturday, the president of the aviation association Alav, Marisela de Loaiza, announced. She did not specify how long these measures would apply.
The US Federal Aviation Administration had warned of dangers in Venezuelan airspace on Friday against the backdrop of the increased US military presence in the Caribbean. Aircraft crossing the area should "exercise caution", it said. The authority cited the "deteriorating security situation and increased military activity in or around Venezuela" as the reason.
USA sends warships and fighter jets
In recent weeks, the USA has sent several warships and combat aircraft to the Caribbean - according to its own statements, to combat drug trafficking. Since September, US forces have repeatedly attacked boats allegedly used by drug smugglers in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific. Dozens of people have been killed in the process.
The USA accuses Venezuela of actively promoting drug smuggling into the United States and thus endangering the security of the USA and its citizens. Venezuela's left-wing nationalist President Nicolás Maduro, on the other hand, suspects US plans to overthrow him.
