South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has warned North Korea against using its nuclear weapons. "If North Korea attempts to use nuclear weapons, it will face the firm and overwhelming response of our military and the South Korea-US alliance. That day will be the end of the North Korean regime," said Yoon in his speech on National Armed Forces Day at a military base in Seongnam, south of the capital Seoul. Yoon also denounced North Korea's "illegal arms trade" with Russia, which he said threatened world peace.

In September, North Korea's ruler Kim Jong Un presented a uranium enrichment facility to the world for the first time and spoke of wanting to "exponentially" increase his stockpile of nuclear weapons. The Stockholm Peace Institute Sipri estimates that North Korea has around 50 nuclear warheads. However, this is only a rough estimate and the exact number is not known. The country is subject to far-reaching UN sanctions and import bans due to its nuclear program. The last known nuclear test took place in 2017.
