Spain wants to fly 350 citizens out of Lebanon. To this end, two air force planes will be sent to the country on Thursday, announced Defense Minister Margarita Robles in an interview with TV station RTVE.

These 350 Spaniards living in Lebanon had expressed the wish to be brought home in view of the tense situation. The Israeli army is currently attacking targets in Lebanon, including once again south of the capital Beirut.

There is also the possibility that a third plane will be sent on Friday to fly out citizens of other countries who have asked Spain to do so, the minister explained. The Spanish government recommends leaving Lebanon. However, the approximately 670 Spanish military personnel stationed in Lebanon would remain in the country for the time being.

Robles criticized the escalation of the conflict by all parties as "unacceptable". "We call for calm and compliance with international law, this situation is unacceptable."

Iran's attack on Israel has been condemned and "a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon is called for in the face of this new development in which a sovereign state is being invaded", said the minister of the left-wing government in Madrid.
