After months of fighting, the Ukrainian army has had to abandon the easternmost part of the small town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region.

"The positions of our defenders have been destroyed", said the spokesman of the responsible army grouping "Khortytsya", Nazar Voloshyn, according to the Interfax-Ukraine agency. It was therefore no longer expedient to hold the Kanal district. A retreat to new positions had been ordered.

There is not a single undamaged building left there. "Bombardments and artillery fire have left behind a lunar landscape," the spokesman stated. A week ago, Voloshyn had said that the Ukrainian army had largely driven the Russian enemy out of the district.

Capture would open up new avenues for Russia

The Russian army had previously announced the capture of this and the neighboring district. According to reports, the Russian military has used heavy glide bombs against Ukrainian positions on a massive scale. Since the spring, the Russian army has been advancing on Chasiv Yar, which lies to the west of Bachmut, which was captured in 2023. If the elevated town is captured, Russia will open up access to the conurbation around the city of Kostyantynivka.

The Russian military also made territorial gains on other sections of the front. For example, Ukrainian military observers recorded progress near Torezk, also located in the Donetsk region. In addition, Russian units are said to have established themselves on a third section in the Kharkiv region on the state border.

Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for more than two years with Western support. Russia recently demanded that Ukraine cede territory in order to put an end to the fighting. Kiev rejects this.
