The US government has assessed the talks held by President Joe Biden's security advisor in China as "open, objective and constructive" on both sides. Jake Sullivan was the first US security adviser to visit the People's Republic in eight years.

A White House statement said that Sullivan had emphasized "the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait" during his meetings with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and representatives of the sole ruling Communist Party. The independent democratic island republic is regarded by China as part of its territory and is supported by the USA, much to Beijing's annoyance.

Sullivan also addressed his concerns about China's support for the Russian arms industry and its impact on European and transatlantic security. He made it clear that the US was determined to defend its allies in the Indo-Pacific region - and pointed out that the US was concerned about China's "destabilizing actions" in the South China Sea.

Diplomacy to continue

Sullivan and Wang pledged to continue high-level diplomacy and working-level consultations, the statement added. The two had already met several times in recent months, but not on Chinese soil.

Beijing had previously emphasized the urgency of talks between the two superpowers. Relations have recently been strained. A personal meeting between Biden and China's President Xi Jinping in November did revive communication between the two sides somewhat. Nevertheless, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said before Sullivan's arrival that Washington had continued to "contain and suppress" China.
