Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris is receiving support from two superstars from the music industry in her election campaign: at appearances by the candidate in the important swing states of Michigan and Georgia, singer and rapper Lizzo ("Truth Hurts") and rapper Usher ("Yeah!") campaigned for the US Vice President, who is running against Republican Donald Trump in the presidential election on November 5.

Georgia and Michigan are among the so-called swing states where the result between Harris and Trump could be particularly close. Both are therefore stepping up their election campaigns in these fiercely contested states. Meanwhile, at an event in Pennsylvania, also a swing state, Trump called Harris a "shitty vice president".

Usher calls for a vote for Harris

"I'm supporting Vice President Harris because she's fighting for the freedoms of all people," Usher said in Atlanta, where he started his music career. "It doesn't matter where you're from, she has a vision for our country that includes everyone." The audience celebrated the 46-year-old and sang along with him. Usher urged people to vote early in the election and went on to say, looking ahead to Election Day, "Everything we do in the next 17 days will affect the lives of our children, our grandchildren and the people we love most."

Harris: What Jimmy Carter can do, so can you

According to Harris' campaign team, there were around 11,000 people at the event. She comes from a middle-class background, the Democrat emphasized. "And I will never forget where I come from," she said in her speech in Atlanta. "Trump will give massive tax cuts to billionaires and corporations - just like last time."

Referring to 100-year-old former president Jimmy Carter, Harris said: "If he can cast his vote early, so can you!" Carter had cast his vote for Harris by absentee ballot in Georgia a few days ago.

Lizzo: Time for a female US president

Singer and rapper Lizzo ("Truth Hurts") campaigned for Harris a few hours earlier in her native Detroit, Michigan. "I'm proud to say that I voted. I voted early and I voted for Kamala Harris," the 36-year-old said at a campaign event. "If you ask me if America is ready for its first female president, I can only say one thing: It's about damn time," Lizzo continued. If Harris wins the election on November 5, the whole country will be like Detroit - "proud like Detroit, resilient like Detroit".

Stars take a stand in the election campaign

Numerous superstars have recently taken a clear stance and backed Democrat Harris - including singers such as Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Beyoncé, music legend Bruce Springsteen and actor George Clooney. US musician Usher will later perform together with Harris in Atlanta in the fiercely contested state of Georgia. Trump is supported by rock rapper Kid Rock and rapper Kanye West, among others.

Harris warns against Trump: "increasingly unstable"

Harris herself answered a few questions from the press before her appearance in Detroit - and commented on her Republican rival Donald Trump, among other things. "Donald Trump has shown himself to be increasingly unstable and unfit," she warned. "I think the American people are seeing that in real time, and we need to take note that this is a person who wants to be president of the United States." A short time later on stage, she again poked fun at Trump's campaign appearances. "He talks about himself and mythical figures all the time, not about working people, not about you."

Trump relies on insults

Trump, meanwhile, campaigned in the equally hotly contested state of Pennsylvania and insulted Harris at an appearance there. She is not as smart as US President Joe Biden, he said of the Democrat. However, he was not the smartest either. "You have to tell Kamala Harris: We can't stand you. You're a shitty vice president. Make you go away, Kamala." Trump repeatedly uses below-the-belt insults and said some time ago that Harris had a "mental disability".
