Two thirds of the young wolves of the Rügiul pack in southern Graubünden may be killed, as can be seen from the cantonal official gazette on Tuesday. This is an order that was stopped by nature conservation organizations in December 2023.

At the time, Pro Natura, WWF Switzerland and Birdlife Switzerland applied to the Federal Administrative Court for a suspensive effect. According to a joint press release at the time, the authorities had disregarded all proportionality with the culling orders and ignored the important role of the wolf in the forest habitat.

Now, the cantonal department responsible informed the public on Tuesday morning about the authorization to shoot wolves. Up to two thirds of the pack's young wolves may be killed by January 31.

Attention is to be paid to a so-called deterrent effect. The wolves are to be shot directly from the pack, as close as possible to livestock herds, settlements or facilities heavily used by humans. Shooting in places where this learning effect is lacking should be avoided.
