This was announced by the Spanish police on Wednesday on X. He is a Frenchman of Tunisian origin, the police confirmed corresponding Spanish media reports on request.
The Dutch public prosecutor's office confirmed the arrest. The 38-year-old man has Tunisian nationality and was arrested on June 6 in Haarlem near Amsterdam.
Immediately after the crime in Madrid last November, three suspects were initially arrested in Spain. Later, a suspect was arrested by the Colombian police and finally, in April, a woman was arrested in the Netherlands, as reported by the newspaper "El País". However, the man who has now been arrested was considered the main suspect. Vidal-Quadras, now 79 years old, survived the attack seriously injured.
According to media reports, the Spanish police are examining several possible motives for the attack. The Spanish newspaper "El País" wrote that the possibility of an attack on behalf of the Dutch Mocro Maffia - an organized crime gang - has not been ruled out. The victim himself had suspected Iran of being behind the crime.
Before founding the right-wing populist Vox at the end of 2013, Vidal-Quadras was a long-time member of the conservative People's Party (PP) and at times its leader in Catalonia. Between 1999 and 2014, he was a PP politician in the EU Parliament, where he was Vice-President.
