In total, more than 2,500 cases of health problems due to "extreme temperatures" have been reported.

According to the ministry, the eastern state of Veracruz recorded the highest number of victims with 56 deaths, followed by the states of Tabasco (18 deaths) and Tamaulipas (17 deaths).

According to a recent study by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) research group, the probability of deadly heatwaves in the USA and Mexico as well as other Central American countries has increased 35 times as a result of climate change.

Heat records were registered in several Mexican cities in May. In Mexico City, 34.7 degrees Celsius was measured on May 25, the highest value since records began. The previous temperature record of 33.9 degrees, set in 1998, had already been broken three times in the Mexican capital this year
