According to the UN emergency aid agency OCHA, around 317,000 people in Sudan have already been affected by flooding and high water after heavy rainfall. According to the latest OCHA report on the effects of the rainy season, around 118,000 people have been left homeless since June.

In some federal states, the water from the Nile overflowing its banks washed poisonous snakes and scorpions onto roads and fields. The stagnant water increases the risk of diseases spreading. The Sudanese Ministry of Health had already announced a cholera epidemic days ago with more than 500 cases and 27 deaths so far.

According to OCHA, the states of North Darfur, West Darfur and River Nile are particularly affected by the severe flooding. The floods mean a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the country, where a bloody power struggle between the de facto ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo has been raging for around 500 days. According to the UN, the conflict has triggered the world's largest refugee crisis. More than ten million people have been displaced or fled. There is also the threat of famine.

Heavy fighting has been taking place in North Darfur in particular for months. The refugee camps, now also affected by flooding, are overcrowded. Aid organizations are also warning that impassable roads are making it difficult or even impossible to transport urgently needed food.
