Teachers in Schaffhausen are to receive a "future-oriented and competitive salary": How high this will be is still open - but the canton can now draw up a new salary system.

On Monday, the cantonal council approved a loan of CHF 840,000 for the development of the salary system for teaching staff at primary and secondary levels I and II, including vocational training and tertiary level, with 55 votes in favor and no votes against or abstentions.

The loan was undisputed by all parliamentary groups. "We are dependent on good schools if we want to move our canton forward," said Rainer Schmidig (EVP), for example.

Ultimately, this loan was also just the logical next step, stated government councillor Patrick Strasser (SP). After all, the cantonal council had approved temporary salary measures for various cantonal occupational groups for four years during its budget debates - now the definitive solution had to be worked out quickly, he said.

Independent salary regulations for teachers in Schaffhausen are now to come into force on August 1, 2028. By separating them from the cantonal system, professional characteristics could be better taken into account, was one of the points made during the brief debate.

This new salary system is now being developed. The cantonal council will then debate its concrete form again at a later date. The bill may also be put to the people.
