The local Swiss woman has largely confessed, as the Zurich cantonal police and the public prosecutor's office announced on Tuesday. The woman arrested is not a member of the fire department, said Elgg municipal president Ruth Büchi-Vögeli (SVP) at the request of Keystone-SDA. "It's a great relief for us that the person is no longer in the village."
Residents living in Holzhäusern in particular had been very worried in recent months. At Wednesday's municipal council meeting, it will be discussed whether the streetlights will now be switched off again at night.
To increase the sense of security, they have been left on at night for months.
Extensive damage after fire in town center
There was a whole series of arson attacks in the small country town near Winterthur in the first half of the year. Several buildings were set on fire or attempts were made to do so. A major fire in the town center in mid-March caused extensive damage to several houses.
The investigation into the arrested woman is still ongoing, according to the press release. The public prosecutor's office opened criminal proceedings and applied to the compulsory measures court for pre-trial detention.
There was also a series of fires in Bonstetten ZH in the first half of the year. At the end of May, the police there arrested a young firefighter as a suspect.
