The number of new admissions to the six state secondary schools in the canton of St. Gallen is below the previous year's level, as the cantonal education department wrote in a press release on Thursday. Overall, the secondary schools nevertheless had more pupils because there were fewer leavers than new entrants. Over 5,000 pupils are taught at the cantonal schools in Burggraben St. Gallen, Brühl St. Gallen, Heerbrugg, Sargans, Wattwil and Wil.

The new school year will start on August 12 with 57 new secondary school classes, the Department of Education added. The average class size is just over 23 pupils.

The most popular main subject at grammar schools is economics and law, which is taken by more than a quarter of young people. In terms of languages, Spanish was the most popular subject.
