The federal government is supporting Schwanden in the canton of Glarus with CHF 3.7 million to deal with the devastating landslides in the Wagenrunse. The federal government has thus complied with a request from the canton, as the latter announced on Wednesday.

The funds were granted in addition to the already agreed co-financing of so-called "forest" protective structures for the years 2020-2024.
The total costs of these protective structures agreed between the federal government and the canton will be massively exceeded due to the necessary repair work in the landslide area in Schwanden. In June, Glarus therefore applied to Bern for an adjustment to the previous amount and the corresponding performance agreement, which has now been approved.
The canton has increased the funding for protective structures for the current year from CHF 2 million to CHF 8.4 million. The federal government's share amounts to CHF 4.6 million. This adjustment to the "Forest protection structures" program agreement now requires the federal government to provide additional funds of CHF 3.7 million.
At the end of August last year, two landslides from the Wagenrunse area hit the district. Shortly before Christmas, earth broke loose again and buried further parts of the district as a debris flow. Total damage was caused to 27 buildings. Over 100 people were evacuated in the meantime.
