The Federal Roads Office (Astra) has planned a new speed measuring system on the A14 highway between the Rotsee LU and Rütihof ZG junctions. The new monitoring system automatically adjusts to the existing GHGW system.

GHGW stands for speed harmonization and hazard warning. The system can counteract congestion and increase road safety by lowering the speed limit on the section of road in question, as Astra announced on Thursday. Depending on traffic density, it can signal a maximum speed of 80, 100 or 120 kilometers per hour.
The new monitoring system is able to permanently read the speed signals using an optical device, according to the statement. This means that the radar unit is only activated when the last speed signal before the measurement location and the signal at the location itself indicate the same speed. This means that drivers see the maximum speed twice before any infringements are penalized.
According to Thomas Kloth, Head of Project Management at Astra, many drivers have not adhered to the speed limit in the past, as he told the Keystone-SDA news agency. This reduced the effectiveness of the GHGW system.
The measuring system will be installed on the nights between July 15 and 17, according to the statement. During this time, there may be traffic disruptions between the Rathausen tunnel and the Gisikon-Root junction. The system will be put into operation in 2025, after which it will be handed over to the Lucerne police.
