Leone has achieved a "historic success", according to a communiqué issued on Friday. The cantonal council said it was impressed by the way she had prevailed in a high-level competition.

"I was rooting for Chiara Leone and particularly admired her consistency, strength of nerve and willpower," councillor and sports director Alex Hürzeler (SVP) was quoted as saying.

He referred to the great tradition of shooting sports in the canton of Aargau. Aargau is also a shooting canton. The first Federal Shooting Festival took place in Aarau in 1824, and the Swiss Shooting Association was founded in the same year. The 200th anniversary of both events will be celebrated in Aarau in mid-August.

Leone's great Olympic victory shows that the sport of shooting has a high status in Aargau." Cantonal Councillor Hürzeler was delighted that Chiara Leone, a young sportswoman, had reached the top of the world rankings and had benefited from the cantonal and Swiss promotion of young talent and sport.

The canton of Aargau will officially recognize Chiara Leone's Olympic victory in due course, as the State Chancellery noted.
