Cantonal elections AG Aargau government election: Incumbents are on the home straight

In the Aargau cantonal council elections, it looks as though the four existing councillors from the SVP, FDP, Center and SP will be confirmed. SVP National Councillor Martina Bircher is likely to defend the second vacant SVP seat. The GLP candidate is ahead of the Green candidate.

The results have been counted in 120 out of 197 municipalities. The best result was achieved by Finance Director and Landammann Markus Dieth (center). He is followed by Construction Director Stephan Attiger (FDP) and Health Director Jean-Pierre Gallati (SVP). According to the interim results, Home Affairs Director Dieter Egli (SP) will also achieve an absolute majority.

SVP National Councillor Martina Bircher is also likely to be elected to the cantonal government at the first attempt. She is well above the absolute majority. National Councillor Beat Flach (GLP) and Grand Councillor Ruth Müri (Greens) are well below the absolute majority.

No woman has been a member of the cantonal government for four years. The seat of long-serving Education Director Alex Hürzeler (SVP) is vacant. Voter turnout is currently around 30 percent.
