The horse breeder was convicted of multiple counts of cruelty to animals by the Arbon District Court in March 2023, as the High Court wrote in a statement on Tuesday. However, he was acquitted of most of the charges.
The animal owner's former partner was found guilty on two counts. Both the horse breeder and his former partner appealed to the High Court.
The High Court has now confirmed the judgment of the Arbon District Court against the horse breeder's former partner in the first part of the proceedings. According to the courts, she helped to remove animals from the farm that had already been confiscated by the veterinary office. The verdict is not yet final.
At the end of October, the High Court will continue with the appeal proceedings against the livestock owner. The trial is expected to focus on the question of whether the evidence collected during the eviction of the farm may be used against him in the criminal proceedings.
Farm in Hefenhofen was evicted in 2017
The horse breeder gained national notoriety in 2017 due to an animal welfare case. At the time, the authorities ordered the farm to be evicted and confiscated 90 horses, among other things. Photos of severely neglected animals had previously circulated in the media.
The horse breeder had been in dispute with the authorities for years. His animal husbandry had been repeatedly criticized.
