The canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden has developed measures to deal with the increasing traffic problems on beautiful excursion days. According to a press release, a parking guidance system will initially be used to direct drivers to free parking spaces in the canton and gain further insights.

Wasserauen AI is literally overrun on nice days. Hikers flock to the Alpstein from here in droves, partly due to photos on social media of the Aescher mountain inn. As there are not enough official parking spaces, they use the meadow parking spaces on farms. The situation is similar in Brülisau AI.

The Innerrhoden government has now taken the first preliminary decisions to solve the increasing traffic problems at the access points to the Alpstein, the canton wrote in a press release on Friday. Parking facilities on agricultural land are to be removed in the medium term, Roland Dähler, Head of the Innerrhoden Department of Economic Affairs, told the Keystone-SDA news agency. They will no longer be available in future, also with a view to water protection.

Instead of simply increasing the number of parking spaces at the arrival points for the time being, a concept for a parking guidance system is to be developed on the basis of data from traffic counts, parking situations and train frequencies. The aim is to guide motorists to the available parking spaces in the canton. A reservation system for parking spaces for guests staying overnight in mountain inns is also being considered, explained Dähler.

In the future, however, an increase in the number of parking spaces in Wasserauen and Appenzell is also being considered.
