The Guthirt school building in Zug is being extended due to the increasing number of pupils. The Basel-based Rahbaran Hürzeler Architekten and Meta Landschaftsarchitektur won the project competition for the extension with their design "Unter der Laube".

The winning project envisages an elongated, four-storey new building along Industriestrasse, the city of Zug announced on Wednesday. This not only integrates harmoniously into the existing pavilion school, but also closes off the school's open space. The central playground will be retained.

According to the press release, the planned new building impressed the jury with its clear and uncluttered structure. The first floor houses the assembly hall and multi-purpose rooms, a partially recessed gymnasium and rooms for the kindergarten. The classrooms and group rooms are located on the upper floors.

The Guthirt school complex dates back to 1953 and was extended in 2007. According to the city of Zug, it has reached its capacity limits due to the increasing number of pupils.

A total of 27 teams took part in the competition.
