These figures refer to the medium population scenario with a predicted increase of 19,000 inhabitants. According to the Statistical Office, this is the most likely scenario.
The high scenario shows growth of 45,000 to over 251,000 people, while the low scenario anticipates a decline to around 195,000 inhabitants.
According to the statistics, the expected population growth is primarily due to immigration. This would result in moderate ageing. The old-age dependency ratio, i.e. over 64-year-olds per 100 inhabitants aged between 20 and 64, is expected to rise from 30.1 today to 31.8. For Switzerland as a whole, an old-age dependency ratio of well over 40 percent is expected.
These forecasts are based on the assumption that Basel-Stadt will remain attractive as a place to live and work and that there will therefore be a corresponding demand for living space, the report continues. It is also assumed that a considerable proportion of the planned site developments will be completed during the forecast period.
