The canton of Basel-Stadt is planning changes to the baccalaureate from the 2027/2028 school year. Computer science and economics and law are to become basic subjects. In addition, students will now be able to choose Italian as well as French for the compulsory basic subjects, as announced by the Department of Education (ED) on Wednesday.

This will give them the choice between two national languages. In addition, new core subjects such as a specialization in IT and nutrition/health/sport are to be created. In doing so, the canton wants to implement the national guidelines for the further development of the gymnasiale Matura (Wegm). The consultation on the implementation proposals will last until September 27, as the ED writes.
Various associations and interest groups from the education and business sectors will be involved in the consultation and will express their views on whether they agree with these proposals. These include associations and teachers, principals and principals, school commissions and student representatives. The University of Basel, the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, the VPOD trade union, the Basel Chamber of Commerce, the employers' association and the trade association can also submit a statement.
The aim of Wegm is to modernize the baccalaureate after almost thirty years, according to the statement. The federal government and cantons have adopted the relevant legal basis for this in 2023. The cantons are responsible for implementation.
