The canton of Basel-Landschaft is expecting a deficit of CHF 62 million for the 2025 budget, Finance Director Anton Lauber (center) announced to the media on Wednesday.

The reasons for this include the continued lower profit distribution from the Swiss National Bank, the lower share of direct federal taxes, the value adjustment at Baselland Cantonal Hospital and rising expenditure.

The biggest cost drivers in the 2025 budget compared to the previous year are primarily the areas of healthcare and education. "We don't have a revenue problem, we have an expenditure problem," said Lauber.

On the income side, things are looking positive for next year. The canton is expecting an increase of 116.3 million francs due to higher tax revenue.
