Seftigenstrasse along the municipal border between Köniz and Bern will be extensively renovated and redesigned over the coming years. Three projects are to be implemented under the direction of the canton of Bern, as the municipal council of the city of Bern wrote in a press release: the extension of the streetcar line to Kleinwabern, the renovation of the center of Wabern and the redesign of Seftigenstrasse between Morillon and Sandrain.
According to the municipal council, the three projects are based on common goals. Public transport connections were to be improved, safety for cyclists increased, the road made more permeable for pedestrians and the necessary streetcar track renovations carried out.
The largest area of land owned by the City of Bern affected by the project is at the Sandrain junction with the connection to Landoltstrasse and Sandrainstrasse, the report continued. The junctions of Morillonstrasse, Monbijoustrasse, Roschistrasse, Wabernstrasse and Friedheimweg also need to be adapted. The costs for the roadworks in these areas will be borne by the City of Bern.
Start of construction planned for 2028
The City of Bern is also financing the new bus shelters towards the city center at the Schönegg and Sandrain stations. It is also contributing to the renewal of the traffic lights.
The Canton of Bern Civil Engineering Office, Bernmobil, the City of Bern, the municipality of Köniz and EWB are planning the project together. Construction is scheduled to start in 2028.
