The new emergency lane conversion will make traffic more fluid, as Astra wrote in a press release on Tuesday. This will increase road safety and reduce avoidance traffic.
The new emergency lane conversion went into operation on Monday. In an initial phase, it will be used during fixed times. On August 24, Astra plans to switch to "dynamic operation". The release of the emergency lane will then depend on the volume of traffic.
Astra had to adapt the A6 extensively for the change of use. This included widening and reinforcing the emergency lane, building five emergency stopping bays, adapting the markings and information boards and equipping the entire stretch with traffic counters and cameras, as was also reported.
According to Astra, the biggest challenges during construction included the very tight space conditions and the proximity to the neighboring residential buildings.
Together with the noise protection, which Astra also implemented between Wankdorf and Muri, the impact on the neighboring districts will be greatly reduced in future, it added. The construction work took three years.
The A6 between Wankdorf and Muri was opened in the 1970s and was frequently overloaded recently. The consequences were traffic jams and traffic diversions.
