Ten days before the vote on the change of canton of Moutier, the Bern-Jura SVP has reaffirmed its "no" position to the media. With the exception of the People's Party, the authorities and parties of the cantons of Bern and Jura are calling on the population to accept the concordat.

The town of Moutier can only lose if it joins "the poor canton of Jura", said four Bernese-Jura SVP politicians in front of the Fountain of Justice in Bern on Thursday. The monument was vandalized in 1986 during acts attributed to the Jura separatists.
"Moutier is heading towards the destruction of a well-functioning organization within a strong canton", said Marc Tobler, Bernese councillor and town councillor of Moutier.
A "painful awakening"
Grand Councillor Etienne Klopfenstein, on the other hand, predicted a "painful awakening" for the inhabitants of Moutier on January 1, 2026 - the day on which the town is to become part of the Jura. However, the politicians conceded that the people of Jura and Bern will most likely not heed their call on September 22.
Should the population of one of the two cantons vote no, Moutier and its 7200 inhabitants would remain in Bern. The cantons and the Confederation want to avoid such a scenario, as it would inevitably lead to tensions.
