Following the closure of Thun's Berntor School, the historic building in which it was housed will continue to be used for educational purposes. The building, which was built as a hotel in 1840, is now used by the cantonal vocational training center IDM and the special elementary school of the prima-familia association.

The property on Hofstettenstrasse is owned by the city of Thun. "The structure and facilities of the building are ideally suited for schools or school-like operations," said municipal councillor Reto Schertenleib, Head of the Directorate of Construction and Real Estate, in a press release issued by the city on Tuesday.
The cantonal education center for industry, services and fashion design (IDM) has around 3,500 students and 300 employees and is spread across five locations. Among other things, the prima-familia association is active in the placement and support of foster families and socio-pedagogical family support. It also runs a special elementary school for children and young people with special educational and support needs.
The private Berntor School closes after 54 years of operation. It will be integrated into the Noss School Center in Spiez from August.
