The bonfires on the summits of the seven Churfirsten peaks planned for the national holiday have been brought forward to July 31. The reason for this is the weather forecast, as Toggenburg Tourism wrote in a press release on Tuesday.

The weather forecast for Thursday, August 1, is too uncertain, according to the press release. For this reason, the seven bonfires on the summits of the Churfirsten will be lit from 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Carmen Carretero, Head of Communications at Toggenburg Tourism, told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
If the weather does not allow the fires to be lit on Wednesday, the sparks will be lit the next possible evening.
The seven simultaneous bonfires on the Churfirsten mountains originated in 2020. The idea was born on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Toggenburg section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and was ultimately adopted by the tourism organization. On several occasions, however, the fires could not be lit on August 1st due to the weather.
In order to have enough wood on the mountain peaks, in recent weeks locals and tourists have been encouraged to pack a log in their rucksack before climbing the summits. These were available at the foot of the individual mountains.
